Feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. Feng can be pronounced as in the beginning part of phoenix (without the -ix). Shui pronounce as shoo-way. Translate literally, Feng means wind and Shui means water. Therefore, you can call it the "wind and water". The wind and water are the stuff that flows and observed by the ancient. The source of the term is purported to be the Burial Book written by Guo Pu in the Jin Dynasty. Qi , the energy of the universe, is carried in the wind and retained within water. Both elements were used as a way of directing Qi, thus giving feng shui its name. Wind is said to carry energy or Qi and therefore represents the principle of change and transformation in nature. Water is said to hold energy and therefore represents the principle of stability. By relating the holding and dispersing qualities of water and wind in nature to those in human behavior, feng shui also seeks to improve the human condition through the manipulation of physical space in a way that will impact on its corresponding qualities in humans.

When applied to human affairs, wind is also representative of action, fervor, and enthusiasm, whereas water is representative of internal strength, meditative qualities, and psychological power. Most of us already practice Feng Shui. We know intuitively when an environment feels balanced and harmonious. As humans, we are naturally drawn to places that feel "just right"; not too bright, not too dark, not too big and not too small, but just right. How do consciously we create this balance. The benefits of Feng Shui include increased energy, good health, awareness of synchronicity, and most of all a feeling of empowerment and increased self-esteem. The goal of Feng Shui is to create living environments that are comfortable, organized and in harmony with our inner being.
